Indiana University Heritage Training in KP Enhances Conservation Skills

The Indiana University heritage training in KP successfully conducted two weeks of intensive training for about 30 staff members of the Directorate General of Archaeology & Museums, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The sessions were part of the U.S. Department of State–funded project “Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” They offered practical guidance on preserving cultural treasures and historic objects.

Training Focus and Expert Leadership

Organized under a major cultural preservation initiative, the training focused on the conservation of decorated surfaces and architectural elements. Participants also learned emergency care of coins and metal objects. The program aimed to strengthen the technical skills of archaeology professionals and enhance heritage protection in the province. KP’s rich archaeological legacy includes museums and historical sites managed by the Directorate General of Archaeology & Museums, which works to preserve and promote cultural heritage in the region.

The sessions were led by conservation specialists Alessandro Lugari and Giuseppe Mantella. Their expertise greatly enriched the learning experience. They demonstrated modern conservation methods and shared practical techniques for safeguarding fragile artifacts. This hands-on approach helped staff gain confidence in handling complex preservation challenges.

Impact on Cultural Heritage Preservation

This training reflects ongoing efforts to raise capacity in heritage and museum management within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. With better skills in conservation, local staff are now more prepared to protect invaluable historical objects. The initiative supports broader goals of preserving the province’s diverse cultural heritage.
