Astore River

Astore River

The Astore River is located in the Astore District, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. It originates from the western slopes of Burzil Pass in the western Himalayas. The river flows through the Astore Valley, a picturesque area on the eastern flank of Nanga Parbat, before merging with the Indus River near Jaglot.

Its basin spans an area of approximately 3927 km², with elevations ranging between 1242 m and 7470 m above sea level. Due to its glacial origins, its basin experiences changes in hydrology caused by glacier melting, which leads to the expansion of glacial lakes, the formation of new ones, and increased risks of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
