Greater Thar National Park

Greater Thar National Park

Greater Thar National Park is a national park covering the Tharparkar, Umarkot, Sanghar, Khairpur and Ghotki districts of Sindh, Pakistan. The park was announced in 2020 by Federal Secretary of Climate Change Naheed Shah Durrani. It is a joint effort between the Federal Government, the Sindh Government and other stakeholders.

The Greater Thar region has long been considered the stronghold of vultures in Sindh. Despite the severe threat to the vulture population in Pakistan, the numbers of some species have increased in Tharparkar. The region is unique, with four resident and three migratory vulture species.

The Greater Thar region is not just home to vultures. According to Mansoor Dahri, head of the Dhartee Development Society, more than 450 species of different birds are found in Tharparkar. Most of these birds have migrated from India due to the destruction of their natural habitats.
