Skardu Fort

Skardu Fort or Kharpocho Fort located in Skardu District, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Kharpocho Fort is built on a rock in the middle of the city of Skardu on the banks of the Indus River. This historic fort was built by the famous Raja ‘Bukha Maqpoon’ of the Maqpoon dynasty between 1490 and 1515 AD. The same king also settled the city of Skardu. Thus the fort of Kharpochu and the city of Skardu are contemporary.

Initially, this fort was called Kharpochhe, gradually the word changed to Kharpocho due to frequent usage. The main gate of Kharpochu was called ‘Singe Sataghu‘. According to ancient traditions, the image of a lion was engraved on this door.
