Upper Chenab Canal

Upper Chenab Canal

Upper Chenab Canal is located in Sialkot , Punjab, Pakistan. It originates from Marala Headworks situated on the Chenab River. The canal irrigates the districts of Gujranwala and Sheikhupura and meets in Ravi near Manga. It was one of the three canals that were built as part of the ‘Triple Canal Project’ launched in 1906 during British India. The canal was opened in 1912 and completed by 1917.

The headworks were first constructed during 1906-1912 to supply water to the Upper Chenab Canal. In addition to the original Upper Chenab Canal, a new Marala Barrage was constructed in 1968 to supply water to the Marala–Ravi Link Canal.

The purpose of the canal was to irrigate 648,000 acres of Gujranwala district as well as divert water to the Ravi River near Baloki. Water diverted to the Ravi River was further diverted through blocky headworks into the Lower Bari Doab Canal, irrigating the districts of Montgomery and Multan.
