Tea Tourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Pakistan’s First Tea-Based Travel Experience

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is set to pioneer tea tourism in Pakistan, making it the country’s first province to blend agriculture with travel. With scenic valleys, fertile soil, and ideal weather, districts like Mansehra, Shangla, Upper Swat, and Upper Dir are now at the heart of a unique project combining tea cultivation with eco-tourism.

Shankiari Tea Gardens as Pilot Project

According to Dr. Abdul Samad, Secretary of Culture, Tourism, Archaeology, and Museums, the Shankiari tea gardens in Mansehra will be the pilot site for Pakistan’s tea tourism model. This initiative aligns with the vision of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who aims to transform Khyber Pakhtunkhwa into a hub of sustainable tourism.

The project was discussed in a meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) delegation, including Ms Nadine Kayal (FAO’s head), John Snell (international tea consultant), and local experts like Mujeeb -ur -Rehman and Dr. Khurshid (Tea Consultant). They emphasized the golden opportunities in Pakistan’s tea sector, from production and marketing to tourism.

A Unique Blend of Agriculture and Tourism

Tea tourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is designed to give travelers more than just a sightseeing experience. Eco-friendly huts and guesthouses will be built inside the gardens, offering tourists the chance to:

  • Stay in nature-rich tea valleys.

  • Join hands-on experiences of plucking and processing tea leaves.

  • Take guided tours of lush plantations.

  • Enjoy cultural evenings featuring crafts, traditions, and local cuisine.

  • Explore educational programs on sustainable agriculture.

This approach combines agro-tourism and eco-tourism, making it a holistic experience for both leisure travelers and researchers.

Reducing Tea Imports and Creating Local Jobs

Pakistan spends billions annually on tea imports. However, the northern climate of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is highly favorable for local tea cultivation. By promoting tea tourism, the province aims to:

  • Reduce dependency on imported tea.

  • Strengthen the national tea industry.

  • Generate employment for local communities.

  • Involve residents in hospitality, guiding services, and small-scale tea businesses.

This initiative highlights the role of tourism in economic growth while ensuring sustainable practices.

Future Expansion of Tea Tourism

The pilot project at Shinkiari will pave the way for expansion to other districts. Dr. Abdul Samad described the initiative as a revolutionary addition to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s tourism map, promising long-term benefits for both travelers and locals.
