Astore

Astore

Astore is a city serving as the administrative center of  Astore District, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Nestled against the mountain wall, Astore is a humble yet culturally rich town with rows of old shops and traditional buildings.

Despite its remote location, it is the gateway to several major trekking and scenic destinations in the region. The town maintains a sleepy atmosphere, but its historical importance and strategic location make it a key point of interest for travelers.

As you drive through the winding Astore Road from Chilum, you’re greeted by lush evergreen pine forests on both sides, with a playful stream from Deosai accompanying you along the way. The town of Astore is historically linked to Ghazi Maqpoon, a mountaineer from Persia who settled here after marrying a princess from Skardu’s royal family, founding dynasties that ruled over Skardu, Astore, Rondu, and Kharmang.

Today, Astore town buzzes with life; its lively market scene teems with barbers, mechanics, grocers, vegetable sellers, hotels, and street vendors. The din of jeeps and bustling trade makes it feel like you’ve stepped into a crowded bazaar of Peshawar. Yet, come evening, the same streets turn silent, enveloped in a calm that feels almost otherworldly.
