Margalla Hills Twin Tunnels
The Margalla Hills Twin Tunnels is an approved project by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government to build two tunnels through the Margalla Hills. It will directly link Khanpur & Haripur in Hazara with Islamabad.
What this means for travellers
The distance between Haripur and Islamabad will shrink to approximately 8 kilometres, reducing journey time to 10-15 minutes. The twin tunnels will connect the M-15 Hazara Motorway directly to Islamabad’s D-12 sector, offering smooth access for both commuters and tourists entering from KP.
Key highlights
Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2025 and is expected to be completed by 25 December 2028. The project is being executed under a public-private partnership model, with an initial allocation of Rs.1 billion for the first year. Design will follow international standards, including full illumination and modern safety features. A feasibility study has already been completed.
