Astola Island

Astola Island, also known as Haft Talar, is located in Gwadar District, Balochistan, Pakistan. It is the only island in Pakistan that is more famous than the other islands. It is located in the Arabian Sea, about 39 kilometers (21 nautical miles) from Pasni Tehsil of Gwadar District.

Etymology

In the Balochi language, ‘Haft Talar’ means seven hills. The island looks like seven hills/peaks when seen from a distance, hence the name.

Features

The island measures approximately 6.7 km in length and 2.3 km in width. The highest point is about 200 m above sea level. The island is completely barren, consisting of rocky and high plain dunes.

Natural Significance

It is Pakistan’s largest nesting site for hawksbill sea turtles. Endangered species of birds and reptiles are found in this area. The presence of coral reefs makes it a unique marine spot in Pakistan.

Religious Significance

The island has a centuries-old shrine of Bibi Hayati. Local fishermen consider it a holy site and often offer prayers here.

How to get and what to do

To get here, you can take a boat from Pasni Jetty. The journey takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the weather, and access becomes difficult in bad weather. Clear waters and a strong coral ecosystem make it an ideal location for Snorkeling, Free Diving, and Scuba Diving.

Important precautions

There is no fresh water, food, shade, or shelter on the island. It is essential to carry full supplies. There are also no commercial hotels or rescue services.
