Chashma Barrage Wildlife Sanctuary
Chashma Barrage Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Mianwali District, Punjab, Pakistan. The sanctuary comprises both aquatic and terrestrial habitats and has a diverse range of bird species. It was granted Ramsar site status on 22-03-1996. It spans an extensive area of 34,099 hectares and serves as a storage reservoir on the Indus River, fostering a diverse range of aquatic plants.
The site plays a significant role as a staging area for a vast number of waterbirds. That includes cranes, during the spring and autumn seasons, with up to 200,000 birds being recorded. Moreover, over 50 bird species, including some that are globally endangered, use the site for breeding purposes. The site is also utilized for several activities such as irrigation water storage, electricity generation, livestock grazing, reed harvesting, and fishing.
