Islam Barrage
Islam Barrage is located on the Sutlej River in Bahawalpur District, Punjab, Pakistan. The Islam Headworks was built from 1922 to 1927 to provide water for a large area of land. The structure is part of the Sutlej Valley Project, and its purpose was to supply water to canals on both sides of the river.
Challenges & Conservation
The barrage is aging; there are design deficiencies and problems with gate operation, mechanical/hydraulic parts, and risk during high floods. Maintenance is reported to be inadequate. Changes in river morphology (e.g., sediment, flow alterations) also pose a risk. Flood passage capacity is possibly less than needed under modern flood intensities (100-year flood estimates).
