Jahlar Lake

Jahlar Lake

Jahlar Lake is located in Khushab District, Punjab, Pakistan. It is one of the three lakes, alongside Uchhali and Khabikki Lakes, that form the Uchhali Wetlands Complex. The lake is spread over 17 hectares and was recognized as a Ramsar site in 1996.

It is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention due to its ecological significance. About 45 types of birds have been observed around the lake, highlighting its importance as a bird habitat.

Jhalar is the smallest lake in the Soon Valley, fed by various small springs and rain. The lake covers an area of approximately 60 hectares (about 148 acres), and is known for its brackish to saline water. It is located in a corner and farthest from all the places in the Soon Valley, close to the village of Jahlar, and is part of the Salt Range region in Punjab.

Its water contains strong acidic elements, due to which there is no life in the lake. Clothes can be washed without soap in the acidic water of the lake.

You can also reach here via Suraki from Nowshera. Due to its distance from the main road in the south of Uchhali, very few people come here. Therefore, here you will find the environment clean and peaceful۔

Biodiversity

This small lake hosts more guest birds than its size. In winter, birds from far and wide come here and stay here until summer. According to a report by the World Wildlife Foundation, there were only 35 species of reptiles here. Which kept decreasing with the increase in population and the increase in chemicals in the lake.

There is no facility like Uchhali and Khabikki Lake here.
