Korang River
Korang River is located in Islamabad and Rawalpindi District, Punjab, Pakistan. It starts from Murree Hills and flows towards Islamabad. The Korang River, aka Korang Nullah, along with other rivers flowing from the Margalla Hills, forms the artificial Rawal Lake in Islamabad.
Challenges
Unfortunately, Korang faces significant threats from human pressures:
Encroachment
Large sections along the riverbanks have been illegally occupied, with construction and land reclamation narrowing the river’s natural corridor.
Pollution
Discharge of sewage, waste dumping, and untreated effluents upstream degrade water quality.
Reduced flow & sedimentation
Reduced catchment health and upstream alterations may affect the river’s flow regime and sediment transport. The Supreme Court in Pakistan has taken notice of the encroachment and ordered the removal of illegal constructions along Korang’s right-of-way.
