Mangla Marala Link Canal
The Mangla Marala Link Canal is a hydro-engineering project in Pakistan. It originates from the existing Bong Canal in District Mirpur, Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K). – That is originates from the Mangla Dam, which passes through Jhelum District, Gujarat, and joins the Chenab River at Marala in Sialkot District. The Canal Head Regulator is located about 8 km downstream of Mangla Dam on New Bong Canal adjacent to Upper Jhelum Canal (UJC).
The work on this project started in November 2010 and the expected completion was initially set for March 2011. However, the expected commencement date was later moved to January 2019 and it was to be completed by December 2021. As of February 2011, 24.253 million rupees have been spent on the project.
The Link Canal has a length of 80 km, including a 19km Tunnel, and a capacity of 10,000 cusecs. The Main Irrigation Canal has a length of 19 km and a capacity of 430 cusecs. The canal is set to irrigate an area of 90,000 Acres.
This canal is to feed the canal systems downstream of Marala Headworks in case of emergencies resulting from stoppage of water by India as well as to safeguard against the probable threats from India.
