Rasul Barrage

Rasul Barrage

Rasul Barrage is located on the Jhelum River between Jhelum District and Mandi Bahauddin District in Punjab, Pakistan. It is about 72 kilometers downstream of Mangla Dam. The present structure was built in 1968, replacing the earlier British-era barrage that has since been dismantled. It is managed by the Punjab Irrigation Department’s Sargodha Zone. The barrage plays a vital role in regulating the river’s flow for irrigation and flood control. It measures around 975 meters in length and 17 meters in width. It has a fall of approximately 6 meters and has a discharge capacity of nearly 24,070 cubic meters per second.

Engineering, Agriculture & Hydrology

Rasool Barrage controls the flow of the Jhelum River. It supplies water for agriculture in districts like Mandi Bahauddin and Sargodha. The Rasul-Qadirabad Link Canal originates from here, diverting water to the Chenab River and then further downstream, ultimately aiding in the distribution of water across regions.

Moreover Lower Jhelum Canal also starts from the barrage and irrigates a large command area (~1.45 million acres) in its service. A small hydel station is linked with the Upper Jhelum Canal at Rasul, with a capacity of around 22 MW (two units of 11 MW each).

There is a Rasul Barrage Wildlife Sanctuary in the area.
