Shangrila Resort

Shangrila Resort

Shangrila Resort is located in the Skardu District, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. It is a popular tourist destination, about 25 minutes by car from Skardu city.

Shangrila was established in 1983 by Brigadier Aslam, brother of Air Marshal Asghar Khan. Its name, ‘Shangri-La’, is taken from the famous novel Lost Horizon by English novelist James Hilton.

This novel is the story of the passengers of a plane that crashes in an unknown high mountain valley. Its surviving passengers are found here by some Buddhist monks who take them to a deceptive paradise-like place where they get all kinds of blessings. This place is called ‘Shangri-La’.

Brigadier Aslam not only named his hotel Shangri-La, but to make it more similar to the novel, he also bought a dilapidated Orient Airlines plane and brought it here. He has turned it into a unique restaurant by installing tables and chairs inside the plane.
