Sidhnai Headworks
Sidhnai Headworks is located on the River Ravi in Khanewal District, Punjab, Pakistan. This is the fourth headworks on the Ravi River, with a capacity to recycle 150,000 cusecs of water. From here, many canal channels diverge, feeding agricultural lands in surrounding areas (for example, canals such as Sidhnai Canal, Fozil Shah, Abduk Hakim, Haveli Koranga, among others). It plays a role in flood control, water allocation, and maintaining river flow regulation. Especially given that Ravi’s water flow is subject to seasonal variation and treaty obligations. It is reachable from nearby towns; the surroundings include canals, green fields, and river embankments, which enhance views.
Issues & Flood-Events
In September 2025, Sidhnai Headworks has been under threat because of rising water levels in the Ravi River. Flows have exceeded or neared their design capacity, which has put pressure on embankments nearby.
Authorities have taken emergency measures: breaching adjacent bunds/dykes (e.g., Mai Safora bund) to relieve pressure on the headworks, issuing flood alerts, and preparing for embankment failures.
The headworks design capacity (150,000 cusecs) has been exceeded during peak flood flows, heightening the risk of flooding in surrounding villages if mitigation measures fail.
