Thar Desert

Thar Desert

The Thar Desert is located in Sanghar District, Sindh, Pakistan. This desert comprises the south-eastern, north-eastern and eastern parts of Sindh. Huge sand dunes are the hallmark of this desert. Sometimes the height of these dunes reaches up to 70 meters.

It is one of the largest deserts in the world. Thar is also called the Friendly Desert because it is easier to reach than other desert areas.

It is one of Pakistan’s most unique and culturally vibrant regions. It forms part of the vast Thar Desert that spans across both Pakistan and India. With sweeping sand dunes, salt lakes, thorn forests, and remote mud-brick villages, Thar offers an exceptional experience for those seeking winter adventures.

The region’s main town, Mithi, sits like a bowl surrounded by golden dunes. Visitors can enjoy camel caravans, herds of cattle, flocks of goats, and graceful peacocks roaming freely. The desert is known for its colorful traditional architecture, such as the conical thatched huts called Chounras, and for the unique desert transport vehicle called Kheekhra. Thar’s peace, simplicity, and rare biodiversity—including desert foxes, deer, jackals, and migratory birds—make it an ideal destination for cultural and eco-tourism in winter.
