Revitalizing Gor Khatri: A Cultural and Culinary Hub in the Heart of Peshawar
PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is breathing new life into Gor Khatri, a historical gem nestled in the inner city. Under the guidance of Tourism Advisor Zahid Chanzeb, plans are underway to restore this tehsil to its original glory and introduce a bustling food street and cultural activities within its expansive yard.
The government’s vision extends beyond Gor Khatri. A comprehensive plan has been initiated to declare the historical buildings of the provincial capital as world heritage sites. These architectural marvels will be renovated and opened to domestic and foreign tourists, allowing them to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of the region. The provincial budget has allocated sufficient funds for this ambitious project.
During a detailed visit to an ancient building in the center of Peshawar, Zahid Chanzeb, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Advisor on Tourism, Culture, and Archeology, was briefed on the features of this magnificent 160 x 160 feet square fort. The tour included a journey from the Middle Ages to the present day, showcasing the evolution of Peshawar.
He also visited a picture gallery based on the history of Peshawar, fire brigade vehicles and ambulances from the British Raj era in 1912, and the shops, furnaces, and garages of artisans skilled in various crafts.
Recognizing Gor Khatri as a cradle of diverse civilizations, Zahid Chanzeb has directed the start of food street and cultural activities in its vast courtyard. Plans are also in place to restore this fort-like building to its original form and make it a part of the virtual tourism gallery, showcasing it to the world.
