Sindh Seeks UNESCO Heritage Status for Banbhore, Ajrak, and Borendo

Karachi, Pakistan: The Government of Sindh has renewed its efforts to secure UNESCO heritage recognition for three of its most iconic cultural treasures — Banbhore, Sindhi Ajrak, and the ancient musical instrument Borendo.

In a high-level meeting between Provincial Minister for Culture and Tourism Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah and UNESCO Pakistan Office Head Fuad Pashayev. Both sides discussed ways to highlight Sindh’s cultural and historical assets on the global stage.

During the meeting, Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah urged the UNESCO chief to expedite the process of declaring these important symbols of Sindh’s identity as part of UNESCO’s official heritage list. He emphasized that recognizing Banbhore, Ajrak, and Borendo would not only preserve the region’s cultural legacy but also promote cultural tourism in Sindh.

Bhanbhor, an ancient archaeological site located near Karachi, is believed to date back to the early Islamic period and has deep historical significance. The Sindhi Ajrak, a traditional block-printed textile, and the Borindu, a centuries-old wind instrument, both reflect the creativity and craftsmanship of Sindh’s people.

Officials noted that heritage recognition by UNESCO would help attract international attention, funding, and tourism to the province, strengthening Sindh’s role as a center of ancient civilization and vibrant cultural expression.
