Murree Glass Train: New Scenic Rail Link from Islamabad to Murree
The much-talked-about Murree Glass Train, a modern electric monorail project is moving closer to reality after authorities released key details about its route, fares, and potential expansion plans.
What is it?
The Murree Glass Train is a monorail line that will connect the capital region to the hill station of Murree. Offering panoramic views of hills and forests while bypassing typical road congestion.
According to the latest official announcements by the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA), the initial route will run from Lake View Park (Islamabad) to a station near Murree bus stop. There will be four stops: Lake View Park → Chattar Park → Ghora Gali → Murree Bus Station. The journey is expected to take about 40 minutes.
Ticket prices have been announced: Standard Rs 500 and Premium Rs 1,000.
Background & Planning
The project was part of a feasibility plan that the provincial government completed in 2025.
Officials highlight that most of the track will be elevated to cope with the hilly terrain of Murree, while preserving the natural landscape and reducing environmental impact.
In recent meetings, consultants recommended extending the route to connect with Islamabad International Airport via Faizabad, potentially creating a seamless link from the airport to Murree. This extension, if approved, would significantly improve convenience for tourists and travelers.
What It Means for Tourism & Travel
-
The Glass Train promises to transform travel between Islamabad and Murree from a road journey often stuck in traffic to a smooth, 40-minute scenic ride. This could greatly ease travel during peak tourism seasons.
-
As an eco-friendly, electric monorail, the project aims to reduce vehicle emissions and traffic congestion on the often-crowded Murree route.
