Punjab Tourism Secretary Reviews Heritage Conservation Projects in Lahore

Lahore, Pakistan – Secretary Tourism, Archaeology & Museums Department, Dr. Ehsan Bhutta, recently visited some of Lahore’s most historic landmarks, including Nadira Begum’s Tomb, Iqbal Manzil, and the Tomb of Ali Mardan, to review ongoing conservation and restoration projects under the ADP schemes for 2025–26.

Dr. Bhutta was accompanied by the Director General of Archaeology, SDO C&W, Deputy Director PHA, Archaeology Consultant, and Malik Hassan. During the visit, the team received detailed updates on restoration works, proposed development schemes, and future plans to preserve Punjab’s rich cultural heritage.

Restoration and Preservation of Nadira Begum’s Tomb

One of the key highlights of the visit was the rehabilitation plan for Nadira Begum’s Tomb, where conservation efforts are focused on restoring the walls to their original state. Dr. Bhutta expressed concern over graffiti damage and directed the Archaeology Department to apply specialized chemical treatments to maintain the authenticity of the monument. The Secretary emphasized that preserving the originality of Mughal-era architecture is vital for both cultural pride and global recognition.

Progress at Iqbal Manzil

At Iqbal Manzil, the birthplace of Allama Iqbal, updates were shared on proposed schemes that aim to enhance the visitor experience. The Secretary highlighted the importance of integrating digital storytelling techniques at Javed Manzil, allowing tourists to explore Pakistan’s history and heritage through modern interactive tools.

Conservation of the Tomb of Ali Mardan Khan

The visit also focused on the ongoing conservation works at Ali Mardan’s Tomb. Dr. Bhutta directed the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) to ensure proper landscaping of the site, while the C&W Department was tasked with improving drainage systems and pathways for better accessibility. These measures are expected to create a welcoming atmosphere for both domestic and international visitors.

Vision for Heritage Tourism in Punjab

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ehsan Bhutta stressed the importance of digital documentation of national heritage, noting that it will serve as a valuable asset for future generations. He underlined that the timely completion of development schemes will not only protect historical monuments but also strengthen Punjab’s position as a leading tourism destination in South Asia.

He further instructed the DG Archaeology and the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) to work in close coordination, ensuring that heritage preservation efforts go hand-in-hand with innovative strategies to attract tourists.
