Miangan Tarakai Game Reserve

Miangan Tarakai Game Reserve is located in Nowshera District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is a significant conservation area known for its rich biodiversity and ecological importance.

Biodiversity and Wildlife

The reserve supports a diverse array of wildlife, including:

  • Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes): This near-threatened species has been recorded in the reserve, playing a vital role in controlling rodent populations and aiding in seed dispersal.
  • Golden Jackal (Canis aureus): Widespread in the region, these omnivores are integral to the ecosystem’s balance.
  • Wild Boar (Sus scrofa): Commonly found in the area, they are known to cause crop damage, leading to human-wildlife conflicts.
  • Indian Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata): An endangered species, the reserve provides critical habitat for its survival.
  • Common Leopard (Panthera pardus): Although elusive, evidence suggests their presence in the area, highlighting the reserve’s role in conserving large carnivores.

Avian Diversity

A study conducted in December 2017 recorded 8,104 individual birds across 30 species and 23 families within the reserve. Notably, the Phasianidae family was well-represented. The construction of the nearby Jalozai Barani Dam has enhanced the habitat, attracting migratory waterfowl and positioning the reserve as a potential ecotourism destination.

Ecological Connectivity

Miangan Tarakai Game Reserve is ecologically linked to neighboring protected areas, including Cherat Wildlife Park, Chapri, Manglot Wildlife Park, and Nizampur Wildlife Park. These connections facilitate wildlife movement and genetic exchange, crucial for species conservation.
