Shandur Polo Ground
Shandur Polo Ground is located in Shandur National Park in Gupis Yasin District, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. The ground is located at an altitude of about 3,700 meters above sea level, making it the highest polo ground in the world. It is the highest polo field in the world and hosts the annual Shandur Polo Festival.
The ground hosts the annual Shandur Polo Festival, a sports festival held from July 7 to 9 every year. The polo tournament is played between teams from Gilgit district and Chitral district under freestyle rules. The polo ground is close to the beautiful Shandur Lake, which is surrounded by the snow-capped Hindu Kush Mountains.
The idea of a polo ground at Shandur was first mooted by Balti Raja Ali Sher Khan of Skardu. However, the ground started during the British rule. In 1935, the UK Administrator for the Northern Territories, Evelyn Hay Cobb, asked Ali Sher Khan and Niyat Qaboo Hayat Kakakhel, the Numdar of Chitral, to build a polo ground at Shandur.
